The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) in the blood. This test is highly sensitive and specific and is the preferred method for the diagnosis of HBsAg infection. An electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) can also be used to detect HBsAg in the blood. This test is less sensitive than ELISA, but it is more specific, meaning it is less likely to give a false positive result.
